On Proximity
Imagine if ten worlds exploded in one mirrored space!

During a lengthy lockdown period, the artistic working and meeting space GLOBE AROMA took the opportunity to re-imagine, reorganise and remodel its space. In autumn 2021, Globe Aroma reopened its doors to artists in need of an artistic workplace.
More than 30 artists from new backgrounds are welcomed into the atelier, experimenting together with values such as solidarity, respect and sharing (of space, materials and ideas).

The atelier functions as a vibrant place where artists from different cultural backgrounds and approaches can meet and find a safer place to develop their work in each other’s presence.

On Proximity is a celebration of the studio’s first year. GLOBE AROMA provides an opportunity for artists currently active in the studio space to collaborate and create an exhibition that celebrates closeness and reflects together on their collective future. The selected group, guided by a series of workshops, discussions and a summer residency, will show both their individual work on different media and a collective work, the “mirrored space”, reflecting on ideas of a shared home and its effects on art creation.

The participating artists are Egoo Dallas, TAMILA, Erik Gonzales, WE_218_ƎW, Mirra Markhaeva, Youssef Moukil, Fareed Aziz and Maria Muehombo.

The exhibition was put together by two of the atelier artists, Fareed Aziz, architect and visual artist, and Maria Muehombo, transdisciplinary artist and DJ. The process was documented by Deborah Ephrem, videographer and photographer, as guest artist.

The exhibition opens as part of Brussels Gallery Weekend on 8 September in Globe Aroma’s headquarters.
