AFA goes AGA Trio | Tarek Al Sayed & Shahab Azinmehr

Dat muziek, melodieën en instrumenten moeiteloos landsgrenzen overstijgen, hoor je op deze avontuurlijke avond.

Tarek Al Sayed en Shahab Azinmehr zijn virtuozen van de Oosterse luit. De Iraniër Shahab Azinmehr begon muziek te maken door te zingen, en leerde later ook de Perzische langhalsluiten tar en setar spelen. Mohammad Musavi, Dariush Talai en Reza Parvizzade waren enkele van de meesters dankzij wie hij ontwikkelde tot een geprezen solist. Tarek Al Sayed studeerde oud, Arabische luit, in Aleppo (Syrië). Sinds hij in ons land woont, maakt hij grote indruk met projecten als Wajd of Jawa ensemble, maar stond ook op het podium van l’Olympia en de Lotto Arena met Tamino. Tarek en Shahab leerden elkaar kennen bij Refa (ex-Refugees for Refugees). Als duo presenteren ze eigen composities waarbij elkaars luiten perfect samenvloeien, met als extra de hemelse zang van Shahab.

Door de geschiedenis heen zijn de regio’s van de zuidelijke Kaukasus en Anatolië getuige geweest van vele ontmoetingen en scheidingen. Tijdens vreedzame tijden dansten de mensen van deze regio’s hand in hand; tijdens oorlogen en genocide zongen ze klaagliederen in karavanen. Het A.G.A. trio – A.G.A. staat voor Armenië, Georgië en Anatolië – verenigt muzikanten uit de drie regio’s in een fraaie bezetting. Als kaval-speler Deniz Mahir Kartel in 2017 Armenië bezoekt, ontmoet hij de duduk-speler Arsen Petrosyan. Samen onderzoeken ze Turks-Armeense melodieën en besluiten om concerten te geven om hun enthousiasme te delen met het publiek. Om het trio compleet te maken, nodigden zij de accordeonist Mikial Yakut uit. De kaval, de hese herdersfluit, kleurt prachtig naast de duduk (dubbelriet-instrument), die een herkenbare tedere klank heeft. Het A.G.A. Trio speelt traditionele stukken waarbij kaval en duduk stevig ondersteund worden door markant accordeonspel. Deze muzikanten geloven dat deze volkeren zullen blijven co-creëren, zich bewust zijnd van de onmogelijkheid om hun traditionele muziek toe te schrijven aan een specifieke etniciteit.

When melodies and instruments transcend national borders…

Tarek Al Sayed and Shahab Azinmehr are virtuosos of the Eastern lute. The Iranian Shahab Azinmehr began to make music with singing, and also learned later on to play the Persian lute tar and setar. Mohammad Musavi, Dariush Talai and Reza Parvizzade are some of the masters thanks to whom he became a renowned soloist. Tarek Al Sayed studied the oud, the Arabic lute, in Alep, Syria. Since his arrival in Belgium, he made a great impression with projects such as Wajd of Jawa ensemble. He also stood on the podium of the Olympia and the Lotto Arena with Tamino. Tarek and Shahab got to know each other via Refa (ex-refugees for refugees). As a duo, they will present their own compositions, the lutes merging perfectly with the celestial voice of Shahab.

Throughout history, the regions of Southern Caucasus and Anatolia have been the witness of many encounters and separations. The inhabitants of these regions used to dance hand in hand in times of peace; during wars and genocides they were singing lamentations in their caravans. The A.G.A. trio – A.G.A. stands for Armenia, Georgia and Anatolia – unites musicians from the three regions in a beautiful line-up. As kaval-player Deniz Mahir Kartel visited Armenia in 2017, he met the duduk-player Arsen Petrosyan. Together they investigated Turkish-Armenian melodies and decided to give concerts, to share their enthusiasm with the public. To complete the trio, they just needed the accordionist Mikial Yakut. The kaval, the flute of shepherds and of gods, gets a beautiful color next to the duduk (double-reed instruments), that has a recognizable delicate sound. The A.G.A trio plays traditional music pieces, where the kaval and duduk are firmly supported by the distinctive accordion playing. These musicians believe that these nations should keep creating together, being aware of the impossibility to attribute their traditional music to one specific ethnicity.
