AFA GOES Défaut d’origine

Op 17 november gaat Art For All naar DÉFAUT D’ORIGINE ((Bouchra Ezzahir + Yasmine Laassal).

Als kind van een illegitiem Belgisch-Marokkaans echtpaar in de jaren zeventig, opgesloten in de niet-erkenning van de diversiteiten die haar vormen, blootgesteld aan gewoon geweld, groeit Yasmine op met schaamte voor een lichaam, een huidskleur en een haarstructuur die ze draagt als een stigma, fysieke attributen die geassocieerd worden met verachte en vernederde gemeenschappen.

Als tiener, na de brute dood van haar vader, ontwikkelt ze, uit haat voor haar lichaam en voor wat “vreemd” is aan haar, een huidziekte die haar dagelijks hindert en die ze verbergt… omdat ze dit nieuwe stigma eindelijk kan verbergen.

Op het podium gaan de stemmen uit het verleden in dialoog met de stem van de volwassen geworden vrouw die voor ons haar schaamte omvormt tot een instrument van vrijheid.

Hoewel het voortdurend verwijst naar de collectieve geschiedenis, vertelt deze autobiografische voorstelling het eigen verhaal van Yasmine, een verhaal dat de logica uitdaagt en clichés trotseert. Het wordt het verhaal van een intiem onderzoek, vol identiteitsproblemen en -vervaging, schaamte, woede, zelfhaat en trots.

Op het toneel reconstrueert Yasmine voor ons de puzzel van een bestaan dat verhinderd wordt door een gebrek aan oorsprong. Door de openhartigheid en de humor waarmee zij de vragen in verband met haar identiteit heeft weten te confronteren, stelt zij ons in staat de kwestie van de innerlijke conflicten waarmee wij worden geconfronteerd wanneer wij een dubbele cultuur dragen of, in ruimere zin, wanneer wij ons niet erkend voelen in ons verschil, op een originele en luchtige manier te benaderen.

The child of an illegitimate Belgian-Moroccan couple in the 1970s, trapped in the non-recognition of the diversities that constitute her, exposed to ordinary violence, Yasmine grows up with shame for a body, a skin colour and a hair texture that she wears as a stigma, physical attributes associated with despised and humiliated communities.

As a teenager, after the brutal death of her father, out of hatred for her body and for what is “foreign” about her, she develops a skin disease that bothers her daily and which she hides because she can finally hide this new stigma.

On stage, the voices of the past enter into dialogue with the voice of the grown-up woman who transforms for us her shame into an instrument of freedom.

Although constantly referencing collective history, this autobiographical performance tells Yasmine’s own story, one that challenges logic and defies clichés. It becomes the story of an intimate investigation, full of identity problems and blurring, shame, anger, self-hatred and pride.

On stage, Yasmine reconstructs for us the puzzle of an existence prevented by a lack of origin. Through the candour and humour with which she has managed to confront the questions related to her identity, she allows us to approach in an original and light-hearted way the issue of the inner conflicts we face when we carry a dual culture or, more broadly, when we do not feel recognised in our differences.
