Op 9 maart gaat Art For All naar Toneelhuis (Antwerpen) voor Dear Winnie (JR.CE.SA.R, KVS & NNT).

Tijdens de anti-apartheidsstrijd stuurde ANC-verzetsstrijder Maurice Mthombeni een brief aan pleitbezorger en vertrouwenspersoon Winnie Mandela. De apartheidsregering onderschepte de brief en publiceerde die in de nationale krant van Zuid-Afrika, om zo tweespalt te zaaien binnen de verzetsbeweging ANC. Maurice Mthombeni vluchtte naar Europa en zette vandaaruit de strijd verder.

Zijn zoon, regisseur en KVS-gezicht Junior Mthombeni, liep al langer rond met het idee om een voorstelling over Winnie Madikizela, beter bekend als Winnie Mandela, te maken. Binnen het huidige Europese klimaat van verdeeldheid dat groepen mensen tegen elkaar opzet, vindt hij de tijd rijp om haar als inspiratiebron op het toneel te brengen. De voorstelling verhoudt zich niet alleen tot deze bijzondere vrouw die, ondanks vernedering, misbruik en ballingschap, haar verzet tegen het apartheidsregime onverminderd bleef voortzetten, maar gaat ook over wat wij vandaag kunnen leren van de strijdlust die haar kenmerkte.

On March 9, Art For All goes to Toneelhuis (Antwerp) to see Dear Winnie (JR.CE.SA.R, KVS & NNT).

During the battle against apartheid, ANC resistance fighter Maurice Mthombeni wrote a letter to his confidante, Winnie Madikizela, better known as Winnie Mandela. The letter was however intercepted by the apartheid regime and published in the national newspaper of South Africa, in order to sow division within the ANC. Maurice Mthombeni fled to Europe and continued the battle from afar.

His son, director and KVS face Junior Mthombeni, long had the idea of creating a performance around Winnie Mandela. Now, within the current European climate of disunity that pits people against one another, he found the time ripe to use Winnie Mandela as a source of inspiration on stage. The performance doesn’t only relate to this particular woman who, despite humiliation, abuse and exile, continued her resistance against the apartheid regime with untiring vigour – it also wants to emphasise what we today can learn from her characteristic fighting spirit.
