LISTENING AS A METHOD OF RESEARCH, WORKSHOP BY MAJAZZ PROJECT
The collective Tashattot* invites Mo’min Swaitat, a London-based Palestinian Bedouin actor, filmmaker, music producer, DJ and archivist from Jenin with Majazz project, an archival record label reissuing and remixing vintage Arab vinyl and cassettes and an alternative research platform.
This workshop will explore listening as an embodied tool through which we can unlock histories, memories and folklore. It will look at how material culture houses sounds, stories and sensations, and work with participants to explore their own heritage and lived/ancestral histories through the use of objects, storytelling, movement, gestures and sound. It will also explore the concept of the archive, what it means to us, who can access it, and what embodied responses it can bring up.
Momin’s own background as a Palestinian Bedouin artist who comes from a long line of musicians and oral storytellers, and his experience in establishing the first Palestinian-led record label, focused on reworking, reissuing and reexamining sounds from the Palestinian archive.
*Tashattot is a Brussels-based collective supporting artists and cultural practitioners from the SWANA region living in Europe. They are launching a new residency program for electronic musicians residing in Brussels. Supported by Globe Aroma and Ancienne Belgique, this residency will offer both technical and artistic support to four electronic musicians over the course of two months.
The residency’s primary goals are to enable the artists to explore new techniques, foster collaborations, and produce a final musical performance to be presented at Ancienne Belgique. The program includes meet-ups, jam sessions, private listening sessions, workshops, and more.
