Christopher-Kulendran-Thomas_ WIELS

At WIELS, Kulendran Thomas presents exclusively new work, including a series of paintings and a 24-channel video work. Kulendran Thomas’s paintings contain references to the work of earlier Sri Lankan modernists such as Justin Pieris Deraniyagala and George Keyt, who are said to have introduced cubism to the island, and were created using a neural network trained in the colonial art history that European settlers brought to Sri Lanka. They are then hand-painted and show scenes on the beaches of the Sri Lankan village of Mullivaikkal. Do they depict a degenerate beach party or a gruesome massacre? Ghostly figures emerge from the darkness, illuminated by the warm glow of a spherical video work titled Peace Core (2024).
