Call for volunteers: refugee helpdesk – Timmerhoutkaai, 10.

The Belgian state and its agency Fedasil are abandoning many asylum seekers by not giving single men a place in a center. Between 2,000 and 3,000 are on the streets, waiting sometimes as long as 5 months for a place to be assigned to them. A group of lawyers, students and citizens run a legal and administrative help desk in the city center.

We receive asylum seekers (about a hundred per afternoon) and help them find a second-line lawyer who can help them find a place to stay and help them with their asylum application process. The office is organized with the help of the French Bar Association in Brussels and in collaboration with the NGO Refugee Work. We are looking for volunteers to help at the refugee help desk. Legal knowledge is not necessary.
