About artworks and artists active in the artistic workplace

What stories does a face tell, and how many?
With his series ملامح الغياب (Features of Absence), 2024, Hussein Shamia explores the wide range of emotions through the faces of everyday people living in Gaza: family members, the neighbour next door, passersby, children playing in the streets. A longtime enthusiast of vivid colors, for this series Hussein chose black and white—and every shade in between—, aiming to capture the full range of human feelings. The faces of people emerging from the dark through the light reveal both the small and big, personal and collective stories speaking about both struggle and hope in the realities of life under occupation. The series becomes an anthology of human emotions and feelings, presented in all their complexity, subtle variations, and nuances.

ملامح الغياب (Features of Absence), 2024 was displayed and ‘narrated’ in front of an audience in the framework of Sea is for Story, Tea is for Telling, December 2024, at Kaaistudios.
